Ron Paul Supporters Visible Georgiana Vines Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson may be a favorite candidate among many local GOP activists, but competitor Ron Paul has a more visible grassroots effort in Knoxville, based on signs and campaign tables around the community. Paul is a physician turned congressman from Fort Jackson, Texas, who has reported raising much of his money on the Internet. On Tuesday, the campaign said he had made U.S. electoral history with an unprecedented single-day fundraising effort with 36,672 unique donors contributing more than $4 million online and more than 200,000 offline for a total of $4.2 million in his presidential campaign. Terri Freels, a Paul organizer who is a home-schooling mom, said she became interested in him after watching the first GOP debate in May. She likes his belief in the U.S. Constitution, giving more rights to states and support for home-school parents.
"He thinks home-schooled children should have the same rights as others," Freels said. She has met him three times at rallies in the Southeast. Jon Dimock, a biomedical equipment technician with Applied Medical Services, was at a table on Market Square on Wednesday. He became interested in Paul because of the "crazy stuff" going on, he said. He identified that as the continuing war in Iraq when arguments used to start it have been disproved and the country's war on terrorism when the U.S. borders are not shut down, he said. The Paul supporters today will have tables with campaign literature and sign-up sheets at the University of Tennessee and Market Square. They'll also be at a gun show at the Knoxville Expo Center this weekend, Freels said. One campaign sheet the Paul supporters have is a "voters guide" comparing their candidate with others seeking the GOP and Democratic nominations. A photo purporting to be former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has him dressed as a woman. A photo of Democratic U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is unflattering in that she appears to be sneering. Thompson is dressed in a business suit as is Paul. The Paul supporters have 182 members in a meetup group, Freels said. The way they contact is through www.meetup.com. Anyone getting onto the site is asked for a name of the person or group to meet up with and a zip code. Paul's supporters on Friday were asked to show up at today's UT football game to distribute campaign information.
