Turkish warplanes and artillery units have pounded Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) targets inside the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

The attacks began at 3 am (midnight GMT) and continued sporadically during the day, PKK spokesman Ahmed Danis was quoted by AFP as saying on Wednesday.

The raids come after Turkish army launched a wave of attacks last month against Kurdish rebels in the Zap region of northern Iraq.

The strikes were focused on the Bazger valley in the Sidikan area, located in the Arbil district, Danis said, adding that there were no casualties.

Ankara estimates that there are some 4,000 PKK rebels holed up in northern Iraq.

The PKK has been fighting with Turkish troops since 1984 in a conflict that has claimed more than 37,000 lives.
