China angrily denounces the US for calling on Beijing to release prisoners jailed since the crackdown on the 1989 democracy protests.

"China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and strong opposition to this. We request the United States to correct its erroneous practices immediately and make efforts to stop creating obstacles toward the development of Sino-US relations," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang said Thursday.

Qin was referring to US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack's statement Tuesday describing the 1989 killings as "brutal and tragic events."

"The United States, year after year, make groundless accusations against China, seriously violating the norms of international relations and grossly interfering in China's internal affairs," he added.

Spokesman Qin concluded the verdict on the 1989 unrest had already "been concluded" and that nearly 20 years later all Chinese enjoyed "democracy and the rule of law."
