Amnesty Bill S. 1639 Defeated JBS Yesterday we wrote: "Your time and effort is requested once again to place much-needed pressure on members of the Senate in hopes that they will reject the passage of S. 1639, including voting no on the cloture vote that is scheduled for Thursday." Thanks to your work, efforts to move the amnesty bill (S. 1639) closer to passage in the Senate were defeated today. According to the Washington Times, "Senators voted 53-46 to block the bill, leaving it 14 shy of the 60 votes needed to move forward to a final up-or-down vote, and its supporters said it was done." This is a key victory in the ongoing effort to preserve America. But the measure may be resurrected again, according to the Times: "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, said it could come back again later this year, but for now it's a catastrophic defeat for President Bush."
For now, though, the great success achieved via the defeat of the Amnesty measure is irrefutable proof that the American people still exercise control over government through Congress, even when, by and large, a large part of that Congress opposes the will of the people. "This immigration bill has become a war between the American people and their government," said Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina. "This vote today is really not about immigration, it's about whether we're going to listen to the American people." Thanks to all those who participated in the effort to stop this dangerous piece of legilsation. Thanks to your efforts, Congress listened. |
