Web Poll: 52% say war doesn't justify surveillance

Fifty-two percent of readers responding to The York Dispatch Web Poll last week indicated that President Bush was not justified by the war on terror in using a secret wiretap program to spy on Americans.

The president has vowed that domestic surveillance of Americans' phone calls and Internet messages without warrants will continue despite that policy's apparent violation of federal wiretap laws. Further, the Justice Department last week said it is investigating the leak of information regarding the top-secret surveillance program.

Forty-eight percent of readers responding to the survey indicated they thought the unique circumstances of the war on terror justified the spying program.

Published reports last week on presidential authorization of such wiretaps in the wake of 9/11 has prompted calls for hearings from both Republicans and Democrats in Congress.

The National Security Agency conducts the surveillance. It normally is restricted to spying abroad. Privacy advocates say the wiretapping in this country, which by law should not be conducted without a warrant, threatens key civil liberties.
