Mullen: Iran war 'not anytime soon' Press
TV US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen rules out the possibility of a US attack on Tehran 'in a near future'. At a Defense Department press conference on Friday, Mullen said despite 'increasing concerns' about Iran's influence in the region, a military intervention with the Islamic Republic would not happen anytime soon. "I am increasingly concerned about Iran's activity not just in Iraq but throughout the region," he claimed. "I have no expectation we are going to get into a conflict with Iran in a near future."
(Article continues below) Despite his lack of 'smoking gun proof', Mullen went on to accuse Tehran of stepping up arms and training support to militia groups in Iraq. This is while the US also claimed on Friday that the military had found newly-manufactured Iranian mortars, rockets and explosives in Iraq. Senior American officials accuse Tehran of providing aid and support to Iraqi militia. Iran, however, has dismissed such allegations, saying as a neighbor, it has sought the restoration of peace and stability in the war-torn country. Pundits believe the US is now increasing attempts to manipulate public opinion about Iran in a bid to portray the country as a threat while whitewashing its failures in Iraq, thus preparing the world for yet another war in the oil-rich Middle East. |
