A House oversight panel is seeking all White House and Defense Secretary communications concerning the death of former NFL star Pat Tillman, who was killed while serving as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan in May of 2004. While the US Military originally reported that Tillman had been killed in an ambush, it was later revealed that he died in a "friendly fire" incident.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent letters Friday to the new Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and White House Counsel Fred Fielding to find out "why the Tillman family and the American public were misled about the cause of death of Army Corporal Patrick Tillman."

In the letter to Gates, Waxman writes, "To assist the Committee with its investigation, I ask that you provide documents relating to how and when high-ranking Defense Department officials learned of the circumstances surrounding Corporal Tillman's death."

"Specifically, the Committee requests that you provide all documents received or generated by the following offices between April 1, 2002, and July I,2004, that relate to Corporal Tillman: 1. The Office of the Secretary of Defense, including the Office of the Secretary and the Office of Public Affairs; 2. The Office of the Secretary of the Army, including the Office of the Secretary and the Office of Public Affairs: and 3. The Offices of Brigadier General Howard Yellen, General Doug Brown, and General John Abizaid, including their personal staff."

The committee wants the documents to be turned over by Friday, May 18, 2007.

In the letter to the White House, Waxman writes, "To assist the Committee with its investigation, I ask that you provide documents relating to how and when White House officials learned of the circumstances surrounding Corporal Tillman's death."

"Specifically, the Committee requests that you provide all documents received or generated by any official in the Executive Office of the President, including the Communications Office and Office of Speechwriting, between April 22, 2002, and July I , 2004, that relate to Corporal Tillman," Waxman's letter continues. "These documents should be provided to the Committee by Friday, May 18, 2007."
